Skylar will be joining Guns N Roses’ Tommy Stinson, M. Ward, Wilco’s Pat Sansone, Lucero, Peter Case, the Dunwells, Star and Micey, Big Star’s Jody Stephens, Lost in the Trees‘ Ari Picker, as well as R.E.M.‘s Mike Mills and Peter Buck, Charles Cleaver, Jeff Crawford, Brett Harris, Django Haskins, Matt McMichaels and Chris Stamey for a fully orchestrated performance of Big Star’s Third/Sister Lovers in Concert at the Paramount Theatre this Thursday evening.

The Ugly Girls are pleased to announce two new places you can sneak a peek at what we’ve been burrowed away working on.

-The first is the all new Blog for the Winter Blues, which features music and art from the community that inspires warmth during the cold season. This week highlights Skylar and Andrea Connolly of BIRDS and ARROWS doing a living room rendition of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. Give it a listen as preview for the homecoming show at Ashland Coffee & Tea February 9!

-The second is on the new hymn compilation, Hymns from the Gathering Church. William, Casey and Skylar collaborated with producer Jeff Crawford on Be Still My Soul. Keep an ear out for the wine glasses humming in the background. The hymns record will be released on January 27 at Carrboro Arts Center.

A few updates as we embark on the road this weekend~

• The Ugly Girls were recently featured on WUNC’s Last Motel with Eric Hodge! We’ll be joining him in the studio in early 2012 (details to come).

• Some wonderful press from our journey to Wilmington in November.

• Our music video for Let’s Not Talk About The End of the World was a finalist in the 2011 HearNC Film Festival.

and lastly…we’ll be playing two shows in NC this Thursday and Friday with our friends Sinful Savage Tigers and T0W3RS and then heading up to Richmond to play two more shows – Saturday with Triangle locals American Aquarium and Sunday as part of the Full Moon Music Extravaganza.

Friday, May 6 at the Local 506 at 9 30 where we are so happy to have our friends Mandolin Orange and Josh Moore open the show. The Ugly Girls are going to be joined by guests James Wallace, Lauren Paynter, and the O! West Late Night Lovers Chorus. It is $5 to get in and $5 for a CD, ugly girl button and other goodies.

we’re getting really excited about our upcoming recording party this weekend at Arbor Ridge Studios.  we have been working with Jeff Crawford (Tomahawks, Mandolin Orange, Max Indian) and James Wallace (Light Pines, Ryan Gustafson, Mandolin Orange) and have been lucky enough to have guests Charles Cleaver (Luego, Max Indian, Tomahawks, Stella Lively) and Lauren Paynter (Lost in the Trees, Physics of Meaning) lend the album their talents.

the only thing left is a large singing chorus of our friends! which is set to be tracked at our celebration/recording party this weekend.  after that we’ll be getting into mixing and mastering, and we look forward to sharing the work with you early this spring.
